Sketches: Anthros by Avanii Sketches: Anthros by Avanii
A little compilation of various anthro sketches I have made the past few months, including some not-yet-introduced characters, such as William and Maloki. William is a fennec fox-red squirrel hybrid (though the fox features are much more dominant) from the same town as Elias is. He's an odd-eyed merchant, specializing in small and rare goods for a high price. He and Elias have known each other for a long time and are around the same age (end twenties, begin thirties). To say they're friends is an overstatement, but William does sometimes offer items at a discount, in exchange for one of Elias' creations or information. Earliesr concept art of William was on my Tumblr: [link] Maloki is a hybrid beyond recognition. There may be some dog, lemur, rabbit and fox in it, but no one really knows. Maloki stands out with his/her (no one really knows his gender for sure either) white fur and black stripes. S/he's a little thief, living on the streets and occasionally works as a spy in exchange for food or coin. Still a youngster, around 11 years old, Maloki never tells about his past. The whereabouts of their family, if they are still alive, are unknown. Maloki is incredibly quick, s/he cannot read or write and hardly speaks, but makes up for it with agility and speed. I had a test animation of Maloki up on my Tumblr too, but never finished it: [link]
The other creatures on here are mostly random, made for fun and to fill up the imaginary streets in Elias' town, haha. I do really like the squirrel girl though, I think I'll keep her as well. A sassy Scottish red squirrel girl, I like that. Then we also have a young deer lady, a very insecure little rabbit, two different mice (one is kind of a shady character, the other with the head cloth may be working at the port/on a ship) and a concept for one of the nobility: a lion-ermine (ermion?), combining the royal manes and noble look of the lion with the luxurious fur and ferocity of the ermine. Not sure if he'll keep this look though. Making up hybrids for this little world is so much fun, I have no idea where I'd want to go, story wise, but man, am I enjoying creating these little characters!

Art and characters are to me, Avanii

I don't suppose you're a Redwall fan by any chance? XD

Heh, I do like Redwall :) Though the fact that 'good' and 'evil' is determined by species most of the time irks me, I believe in free choice xD But the books are very cute and I like the setting a lot too :)

Yeah, that sometimes bugs me too. I like it when one of the evil characters turns good, rare as it is. I'd just noticed that many of your drawings have a very Redwall-esque feel to them. I bet you could make some incredible Redwall fan art :)

Indeed, I generally like those characters, whether they're from the Redwall universe or not :) I like that style of anthro animals most, people told me I may like Redwall because of the way I draw them, and indeed I do. I've just bought a new book (the Outcast of Redwall) so who knows :) Thanks!

Hey, I wanted to ask you, if I can use two of the pictures here as a reference.
I want to make a sheet for myself but I'm not able to draw any pose in this Cartoon form.

I would give credits of course, but only it it's ok for you.

Which ones did you want to use? I don't mind if you reference to get some of the anatomy to look right, but I'd prefer it not to look a lot like my drawing, but with colour added, you see? So, if you want to use a general pose, sure, I can't copyright a pose anyway even if I wanted to :P But please don't copy the entire thing (they're mostly made up hybrid species too, and are character concepts) so I don't really want them to look too similar. I hope that answers the question :)

I love your art so much, so fluid and full of life, and I love the perfect balance you make between giving your characters realistic likeness to real life animals, and more anthro features <3

Ahh I know D: I'm so bad at writing though, coming up with little plots and all is difficult. Maybe I'll just illustrate scenes in their lives or something small like that, until I really know what I want with them :) Thanks though!

Yeah illustration of their lives is a good idea ! Elias would be a good start I think as you depicted pretty well its behavior and character :)

Seriously, that braided squirrel-tail is so great. Also thumbs up for your anthros. I like them way better than those human-body with fur and an animal head. And have I ever told you how much I love the way you draw paws?
I don't know if it was intentional, but five fingers for Maloki semms quite fitting with his or her small narrow fingers and pointy fur.
One thing that confuses me if the last rat-guy. Shoudn't he be blind on that eye if he has scars over them? The most rodents eyes don't lay very deep, where a humans is more protected.

The ermion-nobleman is so pretty, too. All that fluff!

Thanks! :D I love braids, I was wearing one myself when I drew her and I was like, why not give her that braid theme, the tail fur is long enough and I could reuse it in her clothes as well :) My favourite anthros are the ones that keep most of their original animal anatomy and only have certain human traits to distinguish them from their feral relatives. I like them cute :) I agree I'm not fond of the kind you mentioned, it just seems a bit pointless to stick an animal head onto a human torso... I don't know, that just doesn't appeal to me.
That's nice, I originally gave Maloki five fingers because his/her hands and feet are based mostly on those of lemurs and small primates in general. Still considering to put opposable thumbs on the feet as well, but I'm not sure how that would impact the running speed.
You're probably right about the rat/mouse guy, I must confess I didn't really give it much thought but indeed they do stick out more. Perhaps he now has a glass eye to hide the damage xD

Man, I always love your in-depth comments, much appreciated! :)

I love braids, too, but I can't draw them for my life :XD: Not to talk about making them -shiver-
The worst thing is when people use it as an excuse to draw porn and naked people. "They got fur, they're not really naked!" I just don't get it.
Besides, mixing anatomy is so much fun! I'm so glad I found deviantart, otherwise I would never had seen how creatively you can use existing things in fantasy. I love anatomy.
And now I want to draw harpies.

Feet-thumbs might take something from running, but to be able to climb a building could also come in handy if you had to flee. It would be really cool, too ^^ You would be able to hold a purse with your feet and show your hands. "See, I don't have it!"

Looks like he didn't have too much time in front of the mirror this morning, someone's gotta tell him that he has a squint xD

Hehe, it took me some practice with both, and my hair regularly leaves me frustrated because even though it's long, it's cut in layers and there are always bits sticking out of the braid, but I can make one now without much effort, at last xD
Ugh, no, I hate porn. And the other fetish things make me feel very uncomfortable too (I guess that's why I'm very cautious at Furaffinity, they're a lot more open to that kind of anthro 'art', even though there's a lot of amazing stuff on there as well). Indeed, the mixing part is the best of all and the reasons I like drawing them so much! It's like the best of both worlds, with immense variety of species and anatomies, but with the coolness of designing clothes, houses, towns, societies. Plus, my problem with drawing humans is that the expressions often don't 'feel' right to me, and I have little imagination in poses. It's much easier to make a visually interesting drawing of an anthro just standing there than when I would try it with a human character. Of course, that's also part experience, but still. The mixing up is so much fun because of the possibilities (hence the many hybrids in this little world I've built) and because there aren't really any rules. As long as it looks like it could work, it's great!

True, the foot thumbs would help with the thievery and spying business he's got going on. Now I want to draw him holding all kinds of stuff with his feet, haha xD

Haha, I have the feeling this fella doesn't care much about his looks! He seemed the quiet and tough type who'd sit in a corner of a bar and glare at you until you look away. :P

I won't even try to describe my braids.
And then they didn't talk anymore about that. XD
I would love to be able to, though, but I also like my hair short, and then I have to choose -_-

Heard a lot of bad things about FurAffinity. I just choose to stay away from that place, except for some music I got linked directly to, and artists I where know excactly what kind of art they draw.

I actually never have drawn anthros in that way, only tried to build up species, but your kind seems like a lot of fun.
(Have you tried *SenshiStock for pose ideas, by the way? She's my best cure to an art-block)
When I was eleven, I had just met fantasy and wanted to make something amazinglyawesomeneverseenbefore-storything. I quickly build up a world and threw some "species" into it, basically just humans with different animal-features. Because, well, I was eleven, I quickly dumped it, but never really forgot. Now I've learned about mixing anatomy and other animals (mostly from you and Wolfpearl, the other artist I drew for in the Charity Meme) and have grabbed them again. I've also got more brave with trying things out. For examlpe doesn't my nagas have any limbs anymore. And it's so much fun! I still have a few of the old species to remake, and I'm looking forward to when inspiration strikes next time.
Sorry, I ramble a lot =P

I love feet-hands. Most of my favourite creations doesn't have arms, so it's feet-hands and tail-hands and wing-hands all the way.

Would be a bit hard to take someone seriously when one eye glared annoyed and the other one was fixed on his nose =P
I think I need to draw this guy. Too bad I can't draw rats.
I really want to hear more about your and Elias' world now!

Yes, I had my doubts when registering there, but I did want to expand my audience and follow artists that weren't on/left DA. Foxamoore has really beautiful music, is that the musician you mean?

Senshistock is great! I have tons of pictures saved on my computer and have used them for reference various times. Also, her hands&feet challenge is a really good idea and I am participating in the challenge.
That's good to hear :) I agree redesigning old characters or mythological creatures is so much fun! Especially since many myths are rather inconsistent about the looks and characteristics of some monsters, you get a lot of artistic freedom, which is great to break art block, for example.

I'm glad you and other people seem to like these characters! They're kinda different from my other, feral characters, but I think I needed the change since my parents' breakup. A lot of things have changed since then and I guess these are a way for me to deal with it. Now I need to come up with some stories, haha :D

That's a good point ... Yes, it was Foxamoore, their music is so beautiful and inspiring!

Oh, that's true, I knew you were joining the hand-feet challenge xD I'm afraid I won't make it, I'm so laaaazy.
I've never had a 'real' art-block, I can always skecth something. Of course, I'm having a day where everything looks awful now and then, but never for long. And when I do, I take a random senshi-stock image and a random outfit from my big book of clothing though the times and dress it up in xD

A change now and then can be great, it's always good to try out new things. My newest story-universe-thing is very different from my first one, but then I can switch between them if I feel like it :) I really like your ideas with hybrid-anthros. I don't find it surprising that it's liked, people like new, unique things ^^ I love your feral characters too, though.
